Jar Testers (Flocculators)
Jar testers or flocculators are laboratory or pilot-scale devices used mainly in water and wastewater treatment to simulate and optimise the coagulation and flocculation processes before full-scale treatment. They consist of multi-position stirring devices that allow operators to test different chemical dosages and mixing conditions simultaneously in separate beakers.
Jar testers can be used to determine optimal coagulant dosage (e.g. alum, ferric chloride, PAC), test pH adjustment requirements, compare different coagulants or polymer aids, optimise rapid mix and slow mix times, and to evaluate settling characteristics of formed flocs.
